The Challenge

The Agency were focussing their penultimate year of their 5-year strategy on ‘Leadership’ capability for its leaders. They already had a ”menu of training” available for its leaders but they wanted something that was more bespoke and fit more clearly into a framework which gave choice to learners and where the ownership for development sat firmly with the learner.

Q5 were tasked with redesigning the organisation’s approach to leadership development as well as creating a bespoke programme for both its executive and senior leadership population. The success of this programme meant that Q5 were then asked to create and implement a similar curriculum for the core population.

Our Approach

  • Q5 worked in close collaboration with the People Director, Head of Strategy and the capability team throughout the design and delivery of the Brilliant Leadership programme.
  • The Diagnostic phase involved conducting 1:1 interviews with key members of the Exec Team and focus groups with managers and employees, and reviewing existing engagement survey data. We ran an effectiveness diagnostic of the Exec Team, along with a staff survey in order to establish key themes and develop the Learning Objectives for the modules within the programme.
  • We held 3 x 1-day design working sessions to agree the design principles and structure for delivery.
  • We delivered 3 x 1-day workshops consisting of three modules: Brilliant Self, Brilliant Teams & Brilliant Organisation. These modules have core elements, but were also adapted for the different levels of leaders attending the programme (from 6/7s to Bs/Cs).
  • Prior to the in-person experiential workshops, all participants completed a psychometric survey (CMe) to determine their adapted and natural personality preferences at work, which was incorporated into the programme. Participants also had the opportunity to directly influence the future strategy of the Agency as part of their engagement with the programme.

Key Outcomes

  • Over 500 leaders from the Agency have been through all 3 modules of the Brilliant Leadership programme and 93% of participants state that they can now confidently navigate change, think strategically and positively influence others in the agency (an increase of 30% from at the start of the programme).
  • A leadership capability framework that is fit for purpose where there is agreed alignment on the leadership skills needed by the organisation.
  • Improved senior leadership capability – individuals and teams that are self-aware, upskilled, and actively using skills to get results in day-to-day work.
  • A comprehensive report with strategic objectives for the Agency’s new strategic roadmap, arranged in order of priority as determined by the leadership community.
  • An empowered leadership team who are self-motivated to own their personal development and create an environment where learning and development is valued across the organisation.

What our clients say about us

Q5 showed expertise, insight and flexibility and delivered the Executive sessions in a way that was personal and tailored to meet our needs. They have helped the ELT understand their personal leadership styles and improved team understanding and cohesion as well as creating a broader ‘community’ of leaders.  Furthermore, they worked to ensure that the programme is rigorously evaluated as well as embedded in the organisation for the future.
